The Season 7 opener continued the trend of season premiers by doing many things right. I still do not agree with the way they decided to conclude Season 6, however, I will not use that as a negative for this opener. Fans waited and waited for months to see who would meet their fate thanks to Negan and Lucille. The writers figured fans could wait a bit longer, starting the episode AFTER the character deaths. It took nearly twenty minutes (including commercial breaks) to find how who died, but it was shot so perfectly that the first 1/3 of the episode could be mostly forgiven. Following the death(s), Negan is on a mission to get Rick to break. It takes more than most could endure to break, until Negan attempts to force Rick to chop off his own son’s arm with a hatchet. This was the final step in getting Rick to break, and Negan now can assert his dominance. There only appears to be one member who witnessed everything that happened that is not broken. That member seeks vengence.
It should be interesting to see how this affects the surviving characters going forward.
