WWE 2K16 to be released on October 27th / 30th 2015 (in the US / Europe)

I can't see there being anything for the last-gen consoles this year (2K15 was barely a token gesture last year), but hopefully they'll take on board some of the criticisms, particularly with the lack of CAW options and the lack of match types.

Here's the first dev-released pic relating (excluding roster reveal renders) and it shows Finn Bálor looking pleased as punch alongside the in-game model for his demon form.




In the top-left it says "FinBalor_02", so I'm assuming this will be an alternate attire or something that he only uses at NXT specials or WWE PPV events when in Universe mode (exhibition mode will most likely have it available all the time).

The developers have been talking about how this game will have the largest roster ever (a claim made most years, truth be told), but a lot of concerns were being raised that there would be duplicates of superstars to pad it out (e.g. retro-HBK, etc).


The developers are putting that issue to be early -:


"For anyone doubting the ”largest roster ever” tag line for WWE 2k16, let us you assure you, that we are bringing over 120 unique playable Superstars and Divas to the game. Now when we say unique, we’re not counting the repeats like 5 John Cena models, or 8 Mark Henry models. As you can imagine, these models are keeping us crazy busy, but it is worth it. ‪#‎wwe2k16largestrosterever‬"

Blockbuster action film star, 38th Governor of California, former professional bodybuilder and WWE Hall of Famer featured as two playable characters in flagship WWE video game franchise

"I was honored to join the WWE Hall of Fame earlier this year, and now I'll continue my WWE legacy with one of my biggest film roles immortalized in WWE 2K16. Match the Terminator against Stone Cold Steve Austin, Seth Rollins or Daniel Bryan, and there's only one possible outcome: Hasta la vista, baby!"

IGN have some videos up of the game (at an unfinished stage) showing entrances for Seth Rollins and Finn Bálor (demon edition), plus some in-game footage.


"Reversals have long been a tough to balance element, either turning matches into a never-ending chain of non-moves, or being so tricky to use that one player ends up watching helplessly as they get beat to a pulp for minutes at a time. This year, two huge changes to how reversals work may actually solve the issue once and for all. You start each match with a limited stock of reversals. Once you use one, it will slowly regenerate over time, meaning that if you try to counter every move thrown your way, you'll be out in no time flat, leaving you completely vulnerable until one regenerates. What's more, you can now pass on your initial chance to reverse a move at its startup, and instead attempt a mosre difficult to time "major" reversal mid-move. It will cost you two reversal stocks, but the effects can be match-changing, debuffing your opponent in a variety of possible ways and giving you time to really turn things around.


That's it for the big gameplay additions, though there's a bunch of small, significant additions that are either all-new, or a much needed return for something 2K15 was missing. Let's round up the rest of what's been revealed about 2K16:

  • MyCareer is back, and this time it goes a lot further, all the way to you gaining admission to the WWE Hall of Fame.
  • Create a Diva, Create a Show, Create an Arena, and Create a Championship are back in!
  • WWE Universe: Wrestlers can now be booked to multiple shows
  • Online has been "overhauled."
  • Three-man commentary team, with John "Bradshaw" Layfield joining King and Cole.
  • Ladder, handicap, and tornado tag match types added back in.
  • No loading screens between entrances, and you can assault opponents during their entrance!
  • Improved ref and manager AI."




Going from the videos, there's still a lot of work to be done with the graphics, crowd and commentary (which sounds as generic and lame as ever).

I seriously hoping there's a lot of work to go into this year's still, but time's ticking on so it does really look like a case of "different year, same game" like Belty said.


Personally, they're missing a trick on Finn's entrance by not animating at least some of the crowd joining in with the "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!" moments during his entrance.


So far I'm not impressed in the slightest. The only thing that sounds remotely cool is the new stock pile of reversals feature, but that's not enough to make me want to go out and buy this year's version.
