In the fallout of a failed Nevada Athletic Commission drug test, popular and controversial UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.

The 37-year-old from West Linn, Oregon made his retirement official on Wednesday's edition of UFC Tonight.

The announcement came one day after it was reported that Sonnen tested positive for banned substances in a May 23 random drug test for what was a planned July 5 fight against Wanderlei Silva.

"I want to officially announce my retirement from competitive mixed martial arts," Sonnen said.

**** sake, let them all take drugs, who really cares? It makes every sport better when steroids are involved anyway and now we are robbed of Sonnen/Wanderlei for good. Boooooo!

Seriously though, name one sport which wasnt better when steroids were involved. MMA is better, wrestling is better, baseball sucks in general but I assume it was better.

The dream is over. Chael Sonnen has been fired from the UFC in just about every possible way.

The UFC and FOX Sports organizations announced today the termination of their respective broadcasting services agreements with analyst Chael Sonnen. This decision comes in light of Sonnen failing a second test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission for banned substances in June. Sonnen was previously under temporary suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing an initial test conducted in May.

It's a funny. The issue seems to be the amount of different drugs, and the amount of failed tests. In UFC's defence, how many of the ex-fighters they've kept on the books have failed 'roid tests? The guys I can think of who are still in the kind of position Sonnen was in are Chuck, Matt Hughes and Kenny Florian, and I don't remember any of them having provable drug scandals. Obviously Chuck's always had rumours that are so prevalent that they're basically facts, but was he ever suspended for it?

In terms of fighters there's Josh Barnett who is the most obvious one, but in terms of fighters-turned-personalities there's Stephan Bonnar who failed his test for his "fight" with Anderson Silva for pretty much everything and was rewarded with a job for life and a Hall of Fame induction.

Did Bonnar get job-for-lifed? I didn't know about him. Dana has such a hard-on for the TUF season one guys though, so I'm not surprised.

A few things I heard in the Battleground MMA tournament show from CPS:

"I've never given blood, I'm afraid of needles. Well, needles that take blood out, not put stuff in."

About one of the ring girls:

"It's not hard to be a ring girl when you're a centrefold or a supermodel. It takes a lot more confidence when you're a 6 at best."

About the ring announcer:

"How much would I have to pay Dean Stone to follow me around and announce what I'm doing? You know, "now getting out of bed", "now eating breakfast", "now entering the pharmacy"."

I managed to avoid the spoilers and just caught up with the one night tournament. I came in here to throw in some of the quotes you already did, Chris. I'll only add:

After JR mentioned Bobby Lashley: "Bobby Lashley? A cure for insomnia". There was a better line too but it's completely slipped my mind now.

First guest is Ariel Helwani.

My heart's a little broken with Chael post-UFC. I thought it he might let it go a bit, but his commentary with J.R. was so scripted and over-thought, and I don't like it when he gets like that. I don't like being able to hear the pre-planning in something that's supposed to be off the cuff. I imagine his podcast is going to be worked within an inch of existence.
