Biggest Transfer Flops

I'll start with the one which is the most painful to me, and that is £12M on Johan Elmander.

After we sold Anelka to Chelsea for around £15M, many Bolton fans were expecting a big signing to keep our momentum at the time. The likes of Defoe and Darren Bent were linked but in the end we went with a completely left field, bizarre choice in Elmander. Not the goalscorer we very much needed, and was the biggest mistake Gary Megson made when he was here, and it probably cost him in the end.

Any big money transfer disasters which stick out of for you for your particular clubs?

The one that will forever stick in my head for the rest of time, is Tore Andre Flo(p) to Rangers for £12m. :lol

They're probably still paying for it now.

Even though he had a decent goal scoring record, for the price paid I would still consider him a flop. Players have come Scotland for an awful lot less than him and done an awful lot better.

Aye Flo sums up the whole Murray era at Rangers, it got results but by heck did it come at a cost.

Ergh! Magic bringing Flo inspired me to go and watch his debut against Celtic, I miss Old Firm games nothing like them.

It could be argued that a glut of the biggest transfer fees witnessed in the Premier League are all failures. Robinho, Andy Carroll (to Liverpool), Andriy Shevchenko, Fernando Torres (to Chelsea), Juan Veron (to Man Utd), Darren Bent (to Villa). Maybe not spectacular, never got a game out of them failures, but "for the money spent" failures f'sure.

Arsenal have had some duds, but the one which is just a complete, mega, OMG what the hell happenned there, bloody Nora failure... is Park Chu Young. Before joining us he was a fair t'middlin' journeyman of a pretty decent standard, doing his thing in Ligue Une. Never Arsenal quality but still, a handy striker. Probably a bit like South Korea's Frazier Campbell or something.

I am loathe to ever admit Arsene Wenger "panic buys", he doesn't panic buy. Ever. He's a maestro in the transfer market and all-a-yall who think different are out of your brains. Only he, erm, DID panic buy with this guy. If not a panic buy then the kind of buy that makes me wonder if Hannibal Lektor had been playing games with his judgement a-la the current TV show, Hannibal. Or if it wasn't Hannibal Lektor then it was a bizarrely human and sentimental transfer.

Signing for Arsenal seemed to get Park out of being enlisted for his mandatory national service. He played appallingly for us about three times before being loaned to Celta Vigo where he was less appaling but still pretty appaling. I'm not sure if his contract's up this summer or not? I don't think it is. He's going to the World Cup though! :lol.

Cheers!

Carroll was starting to look a player before he was loaned out to West Ham, he changed the game in the FA Cup final against Chelsea where Liverpool were unlucky to come out on the losing side plus at the end of the day you did manage to cut the losses on him and get something in return which in turn pretty much funded the Sturridge transfer.

He was a expensive flop but there have been bigger ones.

I don't think I wouldn't call Berbatov at United a flop, he was probably a shade to expensive but he still scored goals, was top scorer one year I think?

Yeah I'd say Berbatov was probably a bit flop-py, simply because he cost £30m and for that sorta money you need to get at least 4 brilliant seasons out of a player. But he defintely wasn't the biggest flop ever.

Just trying to think of some much cheaper flops. Erm, Xisco at Newcastle springs to mind, as does Hugo Viana. Paulo Futre at West Ham, as well as Florin Radicuoiou (spelling, I know I know :P). Awww man... in the Ranieri days, or first season of Mourinho days, definitely post Abramovic, I'm sure they spent big money on a player who played about once and quietly disappeared for ever. Let me google it (Boyo googles it...). I'm thinking of Jiri Jarosik, but he was "only" £3.5m, so perhaps I've got the wrong fella. Other Chelsea names from the Abramovic era who flopped are... Adrian Mutu, Scott Parker, Mateja Kezman, Asier Del Horno and Khalid Bhoularouz.

Cheers!
