Maxximus
Figured this could use a thread of it's own. ย Ladies and Gentlemen' date=' we have shutdown[/size'].ย A couple of hours ago, the US government began closing down non-essential services and putting hundreds of thousands of "non essential workers" on unpaid leave, in the first such shutdown in . ย Despite last-minute negotiations that ran up to midnight, the US Congress and the Senate proved unable to agree a budget for the new financial year, which began today. With Republicans insisting on cuts to President Obama's Affordable Care Act, and Democrats refusing to budge, time simply ran out.ย It's the first shutdown in 17 years, and the impact could be felt across the global economy.ย Live Updates - theguardian.comย ย I'm sure everything will be fine. John Hancock
God dammit I really hate the Republican Party sometimes. Still, I bet nothing actually happens other than the words "Government Shutdown" sounding kinda cool.
Will O the Wisp
I have felt zero impact in Raleigh. My friend on facebook said things in D.C. are "crazy" but then followed it up with this.ย The DC DMV stays open, but the National parks close. The complication for DC is that we don't have budget autonomy, and no congressional representation.ย We have trash, and power (that's private municipality). PD, EMT, and FDs are open, but park police aren't (they are a division of the National Parks).ย We've had our garbage shut down due to this shit before. Residents were hauling their trash to John Boehner's sidewalk. Serious.ย Sounds like the only thing that has shut down as of now is the park police. :lol Edited October 1, 2013 by Will O the Wisp
John Hancock
D.C.s going to suck, because isn't everything there federal? The fifty states are fine because the federal government stops talking to each other and goes home to masturbate, so the state government just completely takes over, which is what most people in America want anyway. The only part that's going to suck is that no laws are going to change, people are going to moan a lot, and the stock market's going to shit it's pants. Will O the Wisp
Mayor Gray (Mayor of D.C.) has basically said that he isn't going to shut any D.C. government jobs down no matter what congress says. However, he said that if congress pulls funding, he only has financial reserves to keep them going for about 2 weeks.ย This could be considered illegal as he is basically giving congress the finger and siding with the welfare of his constituents. A foreign concept to congress.ย However, you are right about the federal jobs. He has no say about their operation.

Maxximus
Just like I think there should be certified Shamans for all psychedelics I also think their should be at least a guide or 'trip sitter' for Nyquil. That stuff can be strong as hell and do you dirty. I've had some of the strongest 'fever dreams' while sick and on the Nyquil. ย Come to think of it, Nyquil was like a gateway drug for me more than weed or anything. Hmm, never thought, "Nyquil, that's the dragon I'm gonna chase. "ย I always take nyquil to fly, because I get very antsy on long flights (I'm not scared of flying, I'm scared of boredom), last time I flew from New York to London, I messed up the timing of my flight. Nyquil takes an hour to kick in, so I took four of them at 2pm for a flight that turned out to be scheduled for 5pm. JFK is a scary, scary place on four nyquils. ย I'm incredibly happy that they're non prescription, because they're so super effective at just knocking you the f*ck out no matter what, and you can buy them for no good reason, but I question the sensibleness of such a policy when I'm Hunter S. Thompsoning my way around the departure lounge of globally important airports.
Anime Otaku
Somewhat predictably it seems that the shutdown has backfired on the Republicans, a bunch of opinion polls are showing that their ratings have dropped.
Maxximus
Everybody's ratings have dropped. They're out of order. You're out of order. I'm out of order. John Hancock
YOU CAN ACT LIKE A MAN, WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU!?ย I miss the Champagne Room thread of stupid Godfather references. Sigh. ย The most recent major poll shows 63% of Americans are angry with the Republicans, 57% are angry with the Democrats, and 53% are angry with the President. What's interesting is that, after the last shutdown ended, the President at the time, Bill Clinton, got the biggest approval rating of his reign, and the Republican speaker at the time, Newt Gingritch, pretty much had his career ruined, at least in terms of political aspirations, yet the Republicans are giving it a second go, and it looks like the exact same thing is going to happen again, with pretty much universal agreement, even with moderate Republicans, that they're being babies. The real pity as that it'll f*ck up John Lhota's mayoral campaign because, even though he's a pro-gay marriage, anti-religion, pro-marijuana, pro-abortion, pro-women libertarian, he's running on the Republican ticket, which is enough to ruin it for him, even though he's from the Rudy Giuliani school of Republicans that New York City loves, and his main opposition, Bill de Blassio, actually scares the f*cking shit out of me. Anime Otaku
Gallup has a poll out showing that the Republicans favourability rating has dropped to 28%, that's the lowest they've been in a Gallup poll since Gallup started polling in 1992, the previous low was a 31 in 1999, notably the Republicans won the next election that time. John Hancock
It'll be a Democrat Mexican or a Republican Cuban. Second choice is either party getting a white woman, although the Democrats have the obvious advantage there, seeing that every white woman in the Republican party is openly insane. It's not going to be a white guy or a black person of either gender.
Anime Otaku
This is from a left leaning YouTube show but the clip looks legit. Looks like the Republicans did a last minute change before the shutdown to the way the House of Representatives works so that in essence the shutdown can only be ended if John Boehner or someone designated by him calls for a vote on a resolution to start the government up again where as before any member was allowed to call for a vote.
