...or I'll lick the back of your head, baldy!

Anyway, here's the deal, not that anyone cares, but screw it...

As I'm currently on another 72hr movie marathon. I had intended just to ask Johnny-Boy Hancock for a list of 10 semi-obscure films of any genera that he loves and I'd watch the ones that I haven't already seen.

I decided it would be in my best interest, being an avid film fan and having seen so many movies, to open it up to the entire forum. More options that way.

So, everyone, list ten of your all time favorite films from any genera and I'll watch the ones I haven't seen.

Keep in mind I've seen a great deal of the classics as well as most mainstream blockbusters, as well as some foreign and popular indy films.

But have at it, post what you like, discuss them amongst yourselves for all I give a damn if that's something that tickles your fritter. Just help me pick some goddamn movies you orangutangs.

Name checked in the OP. Yeeeeeeeeeah.

My all time top ten:

1 - Pan's Labyrinth

2 - Ed Wood

3 - American Psycho

4 - American Beauty

5 - Spirited Away

6 - Se7en

7 - Fight Club

8 - American History X

9 - The Pianist

10 - Goodbye Lenin

If you want shitey horror films that are as funny as they are scary, ask, I've got roughly 87 million of them stored up in my brain.

OK, ten films I'd reccomend to anybody, trying to ignore the too obvious:

Its A Wonderful Life

Duck Soup

12 Angry Men

In The Bleak Midwinter

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Them!

Ladyhawke

Mutronics

Dark City

Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit.

Watch "The Illusionist", the French silent cartoon comedy, not the shitty American film of the same name which is totally different. It's the story of a stage magician coming to the end of his career, and the end of stage magic being popular in general in the 1950's, and he makes friends with a borderline mentally ill girl who thinks he's genuinely magic. I hate this word, but it's actually genuinely heart warming. It's done in a very similar style to Japanese "children's" cartoons like Spirited Away, in that the comedy is normally quite surreal and subtle and will make you want to go on childish adventures and shit. Watch it now before it gets raped to death by Hollywood, as is the fate of all good non-English, non-Indian films.

I've seen Irréversible. One of the best I've seen in awhile. The others I haven't even heard of. Cheers, Frank.

Johnny, I've got The Illusionist que'd up and ready to go right after I finish watching this shitty Buried rip-off. It's so bad I keep stopping it to post.

You have no idea how much I love that film. It's dear to me.

I've also seen everything Miyazaki(they're awesome and I used to have kids), The Proposition, Hot Fuzz and the Ong Bak movies. The others I'll check out.

This is awesome guys. Keep it up. Just post whatever the hell you think is cool and I'll filter out what I've seen.

edit:

like I said in the OP. Jesus! I really need to lay off the herb. :lol

No problem, hope you find something you like. I Stand Alone by the director/everything else of Irréversible is pretty insane as well. Man just looking around my movie folder I've got an unhealthy amount of lists made up, OCD 4 life.

I know everyone and their dog has seen them about 5 million times, but Old Boy and Battle Royale (Japanese Version) are both great films. For stupid comedy, anything with Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill.... only made funnier by the sometimes atrocious dubbing.

I loved Old Boy and I'm afraid of what Hollywood is gonna do to it. Brilliant film. It feels like a Korean Fight Club to me for some reason. Has that been said before? Maybe I heard it somewhere. Battle Royale was pretty insane.

I seem to genuinely prefer Korean over Japanese films recently. The Koreans have been pumping out some pretty bitchin' horrors.

Have you watched many horror films from Hong Kong Maxx? Those things will just straight f*ck your day up.

They're a really weird mix of Dario Argento style unnervingly tame soft core porn in the middle of a horror film, Sam Rami style slapstick super-violence being played for laughs and scares at the exact same time and David Cronenberg style sleep-ruining latex body-horror designed to make you never, ever want to look at any part of your own body every again, with a light sprinkling of necrophilia in pretty much every single one of them. They're like death metal songs in movie form. Bad death metal songs.

They're pretty hard to come by these days, especially in the west, but they're out there, and worth a look, if only just out of morbid curiosity for a very distinct genre.

Unfortunately no, I haven't. I'll be on the lookout though. That sounds right up my ally. (no homo)

Ugh, it's practically impossible to choose just 10 films.....

I could probably make a completely random list of 100 films from all sorts of genres though.....

As long as they're movies you would recommend, do it. If I haven't seen 'em, I'll check 'em out.

Okay, here it goes.....I'm warning you, it's very random. :)

Iron Fisted Monk (1977)

Nosferatu (1922)

Human Lanterns (1978) - Cool Kung Fu/Horror hybrid

Magnificent Butcher (1979)

Knockabout (1979)

Story of Ricky aka Riki-Oh (1990)

Ninja Scroll (1993)

King Kong (1933)

Gojira (1954) - The original Japanese subtitled version of Godzilla, without the Raymond Burr inserts

Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)

The Carry On films.....any Carry On films

The Man From Hong Kong (1975) - Somewhat cheesy co-production between Hong Kong and Australia, starring Jimmy Wang Yu. The main hero causes more damage and destruction than the villians do! :lol

The One Armed Swordsman (1967)

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978)

Hapkido (1972)

Crank and Crank 2: High Voltage

Police Story, Police Story 2 and Crime Story

Dragons Forever and Wheels on Meals - hell, just about any film starring Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung or Yuen Biao.

Fantasy Mission Force (1982) - One of the most insane films ever made. Features ghosts, Nazi's in 1970's era cars, Jackie Chan, and an incoherant plot!

The Five Deadly Venoms

Just about any film from the Bruceploitation genre. Look it up on Wikipedia, those Bruce Lee clone movies are full of cheesy fun. :P

Zombie Flesh Eaters - features the infamous Zombie vs Shark!

Undisputed 2 and 3

Come Drink With Me (1967)

Dragon Swamp (1969) - This film was an obvious influence on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Even parts of the story are the same.

Super Inframan (1975)

The Master of the Flying Guillotine (1975)

The Legendary Weapons of China (1982)

My Young Auntie (1982)

The 18 Bronzemen 1 and 2

Heroes of the East (1980)

Shaolin Hand Lock (1978)

Duel of Fists (1971)

King Boxer (1973)

.....eh, I'll continue this thing later.

And yes, I know most of them are Kung Fu films, but you did say 'semi-obscure'. :P

EDIT - Actually, to save everyone a lot of time, I'll just say this instead. Check out just about any Kung Fu film from the Shaw Brothers films, any Godzilla movie from the original until Final Wars (but not the American 1998 one) or just about any kung fu movie in general.

One movie that I can never recommend enough is In Bruges. A personal absolute favourite of mine that I consider essential viewing. The rest of my list is just gravy; gravy that I either find particularly wonderful or at least worth a look due to the often strange content of said gravy, but gravy none the less. I've tried to come up with films that not everyone will have seen, hoping that there'll be at least one or two fresh selections here!

Micmacs

Super

A Town Called Panic

Bubba Ho-Tepp

The Triplets of Belleville

The Ladykillers (1955 version)

Persepolis

Fantastic Mr. Fox

The Squid and the Whale
