World Heavyweight Champion Edge finished off Batista for good at Vengeance: Night of Champions… or so he thought. While the Ultimate Opportunist no longer has to worry about The Animal stealing his title, Batista can still make Edge’s life a living hell. After pounding the Rated-R Superstar until he was left still on the mat at the close of SmackDown, The Animal certainly made a statement. Will he continue to punish the man he believes is wearing his gold? Will Edge be able to survive his reign as World Heavyweight Champion?

 

Also on the last SmackDown, Chavo Guerrero proved his champion status once again. After Chavo retained the Cruiserweight Championship for the second time in a week – this time in a Triple Threat Match – it’s hard to imagine anybody being able to take his title away. For how long will his term as champion continue?

 

Deuce & Domino have been bruisers in the ring ever since sporting their gold on leather look, but they haven't had the best of luck outside of the bells. At the Night of Champions, the throwbacks suffered a blast from the past courtesy of Rick Martel and Tony Garea. On the last SmackDown, their most prized possession next to Cherry and their titles – their car – was stolen by Cryme Tyme. Will their luck outside of matches improve or are they crusin’ for a bruisin’ every week?

They announced Ric Flair vs. Fit Finlay for later on tonight.

 

Edge tells Teddy Long backstage that he will do a Cutting Edge segment and will have the biggest guest in the history of the show later tonight.

 

Chris Masters vs. Jimmy Yang. Masters wins with the Master Lock. After the match, The Great Kahli comes down and chokeslams Jimmy Yang and issues an open challenge for the Great American Bash PPV.

 

Torrie Wilson was backstage doing a photo shoot and was met by Victoria. The two started brawling and were broken up by WWE officials.

 

The Major Brothers vs. PCW (Dallas indy promotion) regulars 'Main Event' Mike Fox and Jeremy Young. The Major Brothers got the win in a quick squash match.

 

Ric Flair vs. Fit Finlay. Decent match that went a fair amount of time. Finlay at one point had Flair in the figure four leglock but Flair was able to reverse it. Finlay scored the pin after interference from Little *******.

 

Kenny Dykstra vs. Chuck Palumbo. Palumbo came out on a Harley motorcycle. Palumbo won the match.

 

Eugene vs. Deuce w/ Cherry is up next. This match never happened as The Great Khali came out and chokeslamed Eugene. Batista came out and made the save and basically accepted Khali's open challenge for the GAB PPV. Khali excited the ring while Batista was ready for a fight.

 

The Cutting Edge is next to end the show. The guest is Kane. Edge basically comes out and talks smack. Kane comes out, tells Edge he doesn't like him. Teddy Long comes out to end the show and announces Kane vs. Edge at the great American Bash.

Seriously, I only had to read the first couple of lines and it made it another must watch show for me. They have a really solid basis for a US Title feud there with Flair, Finlay, MVP and Hardy. Flair-Hornswoggle interaction will be a thing of wrestling beauty. Throw in Chuck Palumbo punching bitches in the mouth and me likey Smackdown.

MVP will be first out. It's MVP vs. Matt Hardy to open the show. Hardy won with a twist of fate.

 

If you were thinking that this would be an awesome match...well you were right. Smashing match, Hardy is on fire as is MVP. I do love how JBL continues to put over the midcard, as like the young, up-and-comers working up the ranks to the main event. It makes you root for them, because they seem like they're actually going somewhere. Hardy got the clean pin with the TOF, hopefully this leads to a months-long US Title feud.

 

Chris Masters vs. Jimmy Yang. Masters wins with the Master Lock. After the match, The Great Kahli comes down and chokeslams Jimmy Yang and issues an open challenge for the Great American Bash PPV.

 

Masters has looked so much better since coming to SD and actually wrestling matches against decent opposition. Being able to squash cruisers and try to get a power moveset over is good too. Those of us familiar with Masters' inbuilt heat vacuum will laugh at the boos he gets walking out. Khali beating on Yang is predictable. I have my doubts about his translator though, where's Daivari?

Awesome segment no. 2 from SD already. As you know I'm quite the fan of Divas, and I loved this, despite my hatred of Torrie. Victoria as a mean biatch is great, at least she's doing something, for that matter doing what she does best. Beating on chicks. Torrie calling Vickie "mean" was hilarious, and the ensuing brawl was fun. More of mean Victoria please.

 

The Major Brothers vs. PCW (Dallas indy promotion) regulars 'Main Event' Mike Fox and Jeremy Young. The Major Brothers got the win in a quick squash match.

 

Seems a weird way to try and get them over, since it was a nothing match. But I suppose there's no other team on SD. They're inoffensive, just not that special.

Finlay got the best match out of Flair in a long while. I was a great excuse for JBL to talk about the Von Erichs and every other old wrestler in history. Good finish, with the "Flair taps out to a leg submission in Texas!" stuff.

 

Somewhere in the middle of the show here, give or take, Khali and translator are walkin' and talkin' backstage, before they confront and then beat up a random crew guy with regulation headset on, even though he was just having a conversation with his buddy backstage. Those crazy crew guys. Anywho, my point is, I change my mind about translator guy, he rocks.

 

Kenny Dykstra vs. Chuck Palumbo. Palumbo came out on a Harley motorcycle. Palumbo won the match.

 

Kenny's new gear looks a lot better. I hope they try and do something with him, he's a natural athlete and should be good as a cocky, young heel. Chuck Palumbo returning made me jump out of my socks. I'm not fussed with the biker gimmick, but at least the bike should get him heat. I loved Cole talking about his past and then coming back with "in his SD debut!" I think everyone has at least 5 SD debuts in their career.

I didnt see any of this as I was on the phone. I wish Eugene would just go away. And I suppose Khali/Batista keeps them both occupied. Cant say it excites me.

 

The Cutting Edge is next to end the show. The guest is Kane. Edge basically talks smack. Kane tells Edge he doesn't like him. Teddy Long comes out to end the show and announces Kane vs. Edge at the great American Bash.

 

I'm not the biggest fan of Edge, but he was great in this as the nervous, trying to put the monster at ease, talking heel. Kane coming out was one of the biggest letdowns I can remember, it just hammered home to me how much his star has fallen. Never mind, Edge/Kane should be good for a PPV, even through to SS if they have a decent gimmick match.

 

In conlusion, ladies and gents, awesome Smackdown. WWE TV in general this week has been great.

Khali throwing some random guy into a door and then laughing was by far the highlight of my week. You could take away all the other good stuff like MVP/Matt, Flair/Finlay and the Cutting Edge, and I'd still consider this Smackdown a success. Khali should do that every week from now until the end of time.

What is with the people who write up these spoilers? They always lack alot of detail, misspellings, etc. I took it upon myself to edit the spoilers to where they are more accurate. To kill two birds with one stone, I added some thoughts as well.

My Revised Edition

 

The show starts with United States Champion, MVP making his entrance, followed by Matt Hardy.

 

Non-Title Match: MVP Vs. Matt Hardy- A very back-and-forth style match. If there is one match worth your time, this is the one to watch. After some very nice action including two of MVP's signature's boots (which Matt Hardy kicked out of both) and Matt hitting two side-effects in a row (which MVP kicked out of). Matt Hardy hits MVP with a sudden Twist of Fate for the pinfall victory. Possibly the new #1 Contender for the United States Titles?

 

Backstage: Kristal, Vickie Guerrero, & Theodore Long in (I assume) Long's locker room. Edge comes in and tells Long that he's "not doing anything for him" tonight and starts to walk out. Long stops Edge and asks Edge to host an edition of The Cutting Edge (instead of wrestling) and Edge says that he's "down with that". Long them promised Edge the biggest guest he has ever had on The Cutting Edge.

 

Chris Masters Vs. Jimmy Wang Yang- A fairly short match in which Masters played the power game and Yang hit several high flying moves. Yang attempts a flying crossbody from the top rope, but Masters catches Yang and flips him around and locks him in The Masterlock. After a couple minutes, the referee calls for the submission.

 

After the match, The Great Khali's music hits and Khali and Runjin Singh emerge and slowly make their way to the ring. About the time Khali gets to the apron, Masters rolls out of the ring. Khali then picks up Yang and hits him with the Khali Chokebomb. For the record, this was Khali's first appearance on SmackDown! since the draft. After shouting something in his native language, Runjin interprets what Khali is saying which in short is that he is the greatest wrestler in India and America and there is no match for him. He then declares that there is only three weeks until the Great American Bash and Khali does not have an opponent. Khali and Runjin then issues an open challenge and states that until someone answers Khali's challenge, Khali's reign of destruction will continue. The commentators question who is crazy enough to take up Khali's challenge.

 

Torrie Wilson was shown doing a photo shoot backstage (some sort of Summer gimmick). Victoria then interrupts the shoot and tells Torrie that Torrie will not hog Victoria's spotlight on SmackDown! like she did on RAW. Torrie says that many people think Victoria is "crazy". Victoria ponders for a moment and then throws the big yellow ball (that Torrie was holding for the photo shoot) in Torrie's face. Torrie responds with a hard slap to Victoria. Victoria spears Torrie through the paper backdrop and they brawl on the floor before being broken up while Torrie shouts at Victoria.

 

The Major Brothers Vs. Mike Fox & Jeremy Young- Brett & Brian defeat the jobbers in a decent amount of time. The Majors hit a modified double STO on Jeremy Young and Brett gets the pinfall for the win in The Majors' SmackDown! debut.

 

Finlay Vs. Ric Flair- This match is being billed as the first time these two have wrestled each other (with the exception of WM22 is true, but WM22 was a MITB ladder match). An okay match, but it went very slowly. A typical match by Flair. Some woos and chops. Finlay 'pulled a Flair' and worked over Flair's leg. After Flair locked on the Figure-Four (for the second time; he voluntarily broke it the first time because Finlay almost had the bottom rope), but Hornswoggle emerged and Flair spotted him and broke up the Figure-Four to chop Hornswoggle (looked like in the throat). The referee rolled Hornswoggle out of the ring. As Flair's back was turned, Finlay snatched his shillelagh and hits Flair in the back of the knee while the referee was distracted. For the second time in the match, Finlay locks on the Celtic Knot (Indian Deathlock) and Flair submits (he wasn't pinned).

 

Cut to a backstage hallway where Khali and Runjin are shown discussing something in Khali's language. Khali and Runjin stop in front of two "stagehands". This prompts one to run away. The other stays and Runjin antagonizes the guy and asks him if he hates Khali and some other things of the sort. Khali declares (through Runjin) that Khali doesn't like the stagehand and neither does he. The stagehand says "sorry" and trys to leave, but Khali grabs him by the throat and throws him (one-handed) into some steel doors behind him violently. Runjin and Khali then point and laugh evily.

 

A Mark Henry promo is shown. Henry declares that there are some new faces on SmackDown! due to the draft (which promtps a clip of the new stars on SmackDown!). He then states that if anyone wants to go face-to-face with Henry, he will show him why he is the silverback and the king of the jungle.

 

Kenny Dykstra makes his entrance (and SmackDown! debut) and then grabs a microphone and introduces himself to the SmackDown! crowd and states that he is 21 years old and he is a hall of famer.

 

After Dykstra's rant is over, some unfamiliar music hits. The camera cuts to the entrance and a motorcycle rolls in with Chuck Palumbo on it. Palumbo drives his motorcycle around the ring (Undertaker style). Chuck stops and high fives Rick Achberger and then revs up his motorcycle (in front of Achberger, which caused him to hold his ears). Palumbo parks his Harley (as pointed out by Cole) and gets in the ring and the match begins.

 

Chuck Palumbo Vs. Kenny Dykstra- In his return to SmackDown!, Chuck sports some brown slacks and a greasy rag in his backpocket (mechanic style). A back-and-forth match that was mostly in favor of Palumbo. Chuck hits an impressive spinning side slam that he calls the Full Throttle. Chuck pins Dykstra for the win.

 

Deuce, Domino, & Cherry make their entrance in another classic car (Cole reminds us that Cryme Tyme took D & D's car to the Brisco Chop Shop last week). Deuce is introduced by Chimel and the trio make their typical entrance as Cole points out that Domino suffered a broken nose last week (which prompts JBL to call it "career threatening", eluding to the size of Domino's nose). Eugene then makes his typical entrance with his horrid-looking superhero get up (still with the green-stained boots). Until you see the end of the match, this match up doesn't make sense.

 

Deuce Vs. Eugene- This match actually did get underway, but when Khali and Runjin emerge, the match is over (a No Contest, I assume). Cherry & Domino embrace in fear of Khali. Deuce is still down in the ring and as Khali enters the ring, Deuce slowly gets up, but gets knocked down as quick with a huge chop by Khali. Domino then rolls Eugene in the ring, and for the second time in two weeks, Khali slams Eugene to the mat with his signature chokebomb. Runjin then states that no one in India or America is at Khali's level. After some of the same things, Batista's music cuts off Runjin. Batista emerges (in his gay-looking suit) and gets in the ring and stands face-to-chest with Khali. Batista backs up and takes off his shirt and undershirt and gets in Khali's face (or as close as he can get). Runjin gets in between the two and convinces Khali to leave the ring. Khali points at Batista and talks in his native tongue while looking surprised. Cole points out that Batista has "emphatically accepted Khali's challenge for the Great American Bash.

 

After the second Mysterio return hype of the night, Edge emerges with his usual entrance. Edge grabs a mic and declares that he usually runs through his guest's accolades and the such, but says he can't do that as he doesn't know who his guest is going to be. Edge then prompts his secret guest to emerge, and after a few minutes, the arena goes red and flames explode in the entrance as Kane makes his entrance. Kane gets in the ring and cocks his head and looks at Edge. Despite the reports, Edge didn't get to talking smack right away. He tried sucking up to Kane at first. Stating that he has won several championships and that See No Evil was a big hit (which got a pop from the crowd) and that in October, Kane will have a "Decade of Destruction". Edge accredits Kane for bringing the Inferno Match to the WWE and then says that MVP won't be eager to step in the ring with Kane again after Kane lit MVP's back on fire (during that bit Edge says that the match took place last September at Armageddon, when it happened/happens in December). After this, Edge's attitude changes quick as he says that Kane was only a one-time world champion and that Kane isn't a three-time world champion or a five-time Intercontinental Champion or a two-time winner of the money-in-the-bank or a twelve-time tag team champion. After Edge does all the talking, he looks at his watch (which he doesn't have on) and says that he doesn't have anymore time and tells the crowd goodnight and to tip your waitress (Cole?). Upon attempting to leave, Kane grabs Edge by the arm and Edge gets back to being face-to-face with Kane. Kane then slowly says "I don't like you" while smiling at Edge. Kane then levels Edge with a right hand and Edge makes a hasty exit and as he's crawling back up the entrance way, Edge says that "that's enough, you're never being on The Cutting Edge again" and Edge clarifies that he refuses to ever step in the ring with Kane again. As we expected, upon that statement. Long emerges and tells Edge that "a little birdy told him" that Edge wasn't going to wrestle tonight (didn't Edge tell him that?), so Long booked Kane as Edge's guest on The Cutting Edge. Long then reveals that Edge will be in the ring with Kane again as Edge will defend the World Heavyweight Title against Kane at the Great American Bash. Kane smiles and does his signature taunt in the ring that signals his pyro as the show goes off the air.

 

 

 

 

After all that, I don't really have anything more to say. I will say that MVP/Matt was easily the best match of the night and one of the best in recent memory, which is kind of weird because I read once or twice last month that Matt would be losing his big matches, not winning them, but in any case, I'm all for a run as U.S. Champion for Matt. If Jeff wins the Intercontinental Title, then that's even better.

 

In the Yang/Masters match, I found myself rooting for Masters (I hate the Jimmy Wang Yang gimmick).

 

One has to wonder who distributed those several signs that said "Edge Sucks!" Did Achberger hand them out?

 

Speaking of Achberger, during the Flair/Finlay match, Achberger started pointing towards the apron of the ring that was facing the entrance, which gave away Hornswoggle's appearance to the TV audience. Achberger got a high-five from the returning Chuck Palumbo too.

This reminds me, the counter into the Masterlock was a thing of beauty, I loved it.

Chuck Palumbo has been wrestling for 10 years! Time does indeed fly. He's a BIG dude. Not sold on his gimmick, but I like his smash 'em hard style. I'd have been much more convinced if they'd had him play the role of a detective - under the guise of Chuck Columbo. That would've have been glorious.

 

MVP vs Matt Hardy was wonderful. I leapt up from my chair and squeeled like a pig "TWIST OF FATE!!!!!" - which goes to show by just jazzing up a finisher ever so slightly, it has a HUGE impact on the wrestler performing said finisher. Little things like that are what make Superatars.

 

Finlay is the perfect opponant for Ric Flair. He's not super fast - he's slow and painful! Flair doesn't look too good trying to run around the ring, so by slowing the pace they're using him well. Pretty damn entertaining.

 

The Major Brothers need a gimmick. Maybe they could be the Major Detective Brothers....

Hands down my favourite SD! ending in a VERY long time! I am a massive Kane fan and got so excited, I almost fell off the sofa... Oh I hope he kicks Edge into next week at the GAB!!!

I thought Smackdown was decent this week. MVP/Hardy I missed half of but what I did see impressed me, both of them have had great years so far. In terms of building stars I thought it was quite a productive show, Masters actually looked good, Palumbo looked alright, decent big man look, Major Bros seemed alright and Dykstra didn't do much but he shouldn't have lost if they're going to push him which I hope they do.

 

Kane being the Cutting Edge guest was great, haven't seen him in a while so i'll be looking forward to his match with Edge, hopefully a feud would be nice as I remember their brief feud in 2005 which I enjoyed.

I can't help but think that Rey Mysterio was originally slated to be Edge's guest (which I read was the original plan for GAB was to have Edge Vs. Rey for the World Title). I would love to see Kane win the World Title, but I don't think it would happen.

 

Does anyone else feel that Matt could make the step-up to the plate to challenge Edge for the World Title? They seem to be close to the same size and with some gradually better matches, I could see it happening. Possibly at SummerSlam (it would be the two year anniversary of their match after Matt's return)?

I liked Smackdown this week.

 

MVP vs Matt Hardy - Great match. Back and Forth action and it really shows how WWE wants to push Matt Hardy as a future main eventer. I like the way Matt always does his Twist of Fate out of nowhere. MVP did some really nice moves there, like the top rope belly to belly, very impressive. I hope they get another match soon. ***1/2

 

Chris Masters vs Jimmy Wang Yang - Not a bad match, but I'm just curious to see what they want to do with Masters' character. Since he lost numerous times against Super Crazy on Raw, he's nothing. Average match. *1/4

 

The Major Brothers vs Jeremy Young and Mike Fox - This match was just put there to show what the Major Brothers are capable of and it was a nice showing. They're a great dynamic young tag team with some really good tag team moves. They remember me some young Hardyz during the 1999. Not a bad match again. *3/4

 

Fit Finlay vs Ric Flair - Old school match. The crowd was really into it with everybody doing the classic "WOOS". A nice psychological match like Finlay's match usually are. It was the greatest Flair match in a long time and I hope these two feud soon. Good match. **1/2

 

Kenny Dykstra vs Chuck Palumbo - Kenny should team with an established wrestler like Edge so he could get more Mic work and more character developpement, he's got great skills in the ring, Palumbo did some nice power moves but I'm curious to see what they'll do with him. Ok match. *1/2

 

Batista accepting the Great Khali's open challenge (Btw the great Khali's backstage segment was really good) is a good idea to me, because it will refresh Batista as a character and it'll be good that we don't see him in the main events for a little moment. A feud with somebody else than the champion is not a bad idea itself.

 

The Cutting Edge was really good and a nice idea to start the Edge/Kane feud. It's been a long time since Kane has gotten a big feud with somebody else than jobbers. It should be a great feud with Edge. The segment itself was good with Edge trying to do the nice guy with Kane. I've always liked the demoniac laugh of Kane.

 

Final thoughts: A really good show that is really worth seeing. 8/10

Another solid Smackdown

 

Yet another Hardy match that was given enough time to deliver the goods. I'd say it wasn't one of the best matches V1 has pulled out recently, but it was still damn good. I see absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be rewarded with a US title run towards the tail end of this year

 

Batista and Khali will inevitably be horrible, but it still has that big fight feel to it

 

I struggled to think of who might challenge Edge for the WHC now that Batista is out of the picture, and with Taker still sidelined, i think Kane is probably the best bet. There'll undoubtably be pessimists about how this will all turn out, but the last time these two worked each other on Raw a couple of years back, they had an awesome match at Vengeance. Nice Cutting Edge segment where the champ did a good job of getting Kane over

JBL's commentary during Dykstra/Palumbo???

 

After watching this match on Fridays Smackdown, did anyone notice the bewildering commentary that came from Mr Layfield?

 

Dykstra cut a promo at the start at the match where he insisted that he was a future hall of famer even though he was only 21, does this not qualify as an opportunity for JBL to push this prospects potential and gloat about his arrogance/confidence? This then leads the way for Michael Cole to enter debate with JBL, insisting that the kid needs to prove his worth and not talk about it.

 

Although JBL's commentary has been entertaining since he swapped the trunks for the headset, there has been a lot of incostincies in some of his calls. He continually promoted the potential of guys such as Kennedy and MVP, but when someone who is need of it, ie Dykstra, he takes an impartial stance.

 

By the way, don't like Dykstra's chances if he's jobbing to stale gimmicks such as Palumbo's new one.

For me this is what has made JBL on commentary such a success.

 

His regard and disregard for Heels and Faces alike, has often made me laugh, but you have to remember, alot of what JBL says is true, and he genuinely has a disregard for many of the younger brasher stars like Miz and Dykstra

Eh? Palumbo is awesome. Much better than Dykstra anyway. He does throw some beautiful punches.
