Domestic Violence in Wrestling

Debra speaks out:

Steve Austin's ex-wife, Debra Marshall, has spoken out on the Chris Benoit situation in a story for the FOX affiliate in Colorado.

- She called the domestic and drug abuse in WWE "out of hand" and brought up the statistic of 60 wrestlers under the age of 45 having died in the last ten years.

- Debra went as far as claiming that her story is very similar to Nancy Benoit's story, mentioning that Nancy had sought help from law enforcement in 2003 for domestic abuse.

- Debra also stated that like Nancy, Austin had basically forced her to write a letter to authorities saying the original complaint was a mistake.

- Debra said that she had personally seen Steve Austin take steroids.

- Debra said that had she spoken up earlier about how out of control domestic abuse is in wrestling, maybe Nancy and Daniel would still be alive today.

- Debra said that she "knows what it's like" to have someone who is really big sitting on top of you hitting you.

- Debra said she is glad she is alive after going through what she went through with Steve Austin.

I was going to post this in the Benoit thread, but I felt it deserved a topic of its own. Many times I have heard about wrestlers being violent towards their spouses, but its almost always been the guys on roids. Is temper an issue in general within the higher levels of pro wrestling? if so what is causing it? The roids? The pressure of the job? Or maybe the simulation of violence echos so strongly that lines become blurred?

What do you guys think?

The scary thing is, everytime something like this happens in wrestling I wonder what goes on behind the scenes that we cannot even contemplate.

I think lifestyle's probably got something to do with it. Constantly on the road, with various bruises and aches from busting your backside 3 or 4 times a week minimum, for virtually every week of the year. Stress levels must be ridiculous, plus pressure to always look good means inevitable steroid use, and your life just becomes so far removed from well normal living, I could imagine you almost become like a machine.

I don't think roids has anything to do with it as much, cause you here very similar stories about movie stars and high profile musicians. I think its down to the life they lead. I imagine the drugs don't help, but I'm sure there's far more to it than that.

My father is not a professional wrestler. He is however an alcoholic and I have witnessed on several occasions him beating my mother to a pulp. Alcoholism is also an aspect of wrestling that needs to be held in the spotlight too. Steve Williams was known to be an alcoholic, yet Debra or the media never mentioned this.

I am happy to say though my father has made several life changes and seems to be on the road to recovery - plus he is not afforded thousands of pounds/dollars to hire help.

In my opinion, wrestling seems too fond of it's "boys will be boys" attitude to the outside conduct of members of the business. I'm going to post a reply I put in the Benoit thread;

IMO: The reason we are seeing increasing deaths of wrestlers and valets is that their wild lifestyles (I.e booze and drugs) from their road days (and lets face it we've all heard the stories) as well as over reliance on painkillers rather than rest (due to financial pressure etc) are catching up and as they get older their bodies finally begin to break down. It's no coincidence that all the recent deaths seem to be the same kind of era (Davey boy, Hawk, Sherri, Liz, Eddy) etc. Of course the acts perpetrated at the weekend (murder/suicide, or the fatal accident of Owen or even the passing of Chris Candido (thrombosis) are freak occurences.

The simple facts are that the world of wrestling needs to look very hard at the proliferation of drugs (prescription or otherwise) being used by it's people. Regardless of whether steroids played any part in the Benoit murders. It is time that wrestlers were looked after instead of needing to take these overdoses to keep paying the bills. Look at the walking disaster that is Kurt Angle for example.

Maybe wrestling fundimentally needs to change. Schedules to be lightened and talent rotated better. Also the idea of bodybuilding monsters seems to be better consigned to the past. Wrestling is an athletic pursuit - fans don't care if someone looks like adonis, all they care is that they get a good show.

Anyway I hijacked this thread a bit there

Is Rey Mysterio on steroids? In his 619 DVD him and his wife seemed really in tune. I'd lose all faith if Rey Rey was a steroid pumping wife beater.

Also, I don't really buy these 'beaten wife' stories, especially when the victim is (at least semi) famous in their own right. The guy isn't there ALL the time. Publicly state what he's done, then LEAVE. Simple.

Rey's most definitely on them. 95% of the WWE roster are. Its a sad fact but there you go.

But I don't think its as simple as steroids= wife beater, thats just silly.

Oh yeah I know, just saying i'd be dissapointed if Rey was one of the ones who WAS.

I refuse to believe Rey is on the roids. :P

Looking at him, his arms aren't that ripped really, but his chest is quite big.

Just compare him to say when he was in WCW.

His body definition is odd to, he's probably carrying too much weight which probably weakens his legs, which doesn't help his troublesome knees either.

On the Debra thing, Austin is well known to drink a load of beers. Maybe that added to the fact she must have been ****ing annoying especially with that voice got her beatings?

Darkstar, take away the non mask picture! That's total spoilage!

WHAT? In what way is it spoilage? He wrestled for a few years without a mask, Im not going to pretend otherwise just because WWe wanted a masked man to help sell merch.

I posted a then and now side-by-side pic of Rey in a previous thread. He IS on steroids, it cant be denied.

Just because you are on steroids though, doesnt automatically beat your wife etc, but I think anybody who pans off steroid involvement is being close minded and a little foolish.

Steroids are playing a part in these wrestlers lives in a negative way from health to attitude to temper, without question.

It's hardly spoilage when the picture is years old.:lol

As for the steroid question. I think the news channels and a few other individuals need to realise their is a difference between steriod use and steroid abuse.

Well yeah but some people might not wanna know what he looks like. :)

Really? Is it okay to use steroids, as long as you don't take too many?

Not a great comparison, but no real 'before' pic is needed to see Rey is juiced in the 'after' pic:

Check out the size and shape of his head and face, its all puffy and bloated. The guy is obviously on vast amounts of HGH aswell.

My point about Rey is thatin the after pic he IS a bit bigger, but he doesn't have viens pumping out or anything, and he seems to be shaped exactly the same. Just a bit...y'know, bigger. So maybe he just worked out at the gym some more.

You dont need viens pumping out to be on roids, check out Hogan, a monster steroid abuser, never saw a single vien on him, or even a good cut up muscular build.

Look at Rey, he is what? 5'2" or something? His natural body size isnt what he is carrying. You can work out 12 hours per day in the gym, doesnt matter, once you reach your maximum natural body potential, you will not get any bigger, its impossible. Your body reaches its maximum for size potential, you cant get bigger than that unless you use steroids which Rey is using.

Look how puffy and bloated he is, typical steroid traits. Look how thick and puffy his face is, you wont get a fat head from working out :lol

Its ok to use steroids when they are prescribed by a doctor with a given dose to heal muscle tears or if you are having trouble breathing etc (I know asthma sufferers are given steroids), but they are different, they arent anabolic steroids that you inject into your ass. They are given in pill form, very low dosage or given intravenously.
