Alcohol in a new form

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch students have invented powdered alcohol which they say can be sold legally to minors.

The latest innovation in inebriation, called Booz2Go, is available in 20-gramme packets that cost 1-1.5 euros (70 pence-1 pound).

Top it up with water and you have a bubbly, lime-coloured and -flavoured drink with just 3 percent alcohol content.

"We are aiming for the youth market. They are really more into it because you can compare it with Bacardi-mixed drinks," 20-year-old Harm van Elderen told Reuters.

Van Elderen and four classmates at Helicon Vocational Institute, about an hour's drive from Amsterdam, came up with the idea as part of their final-year project.

"Because the alcohol is not in liquid form, we can sell it to people below 16," said project member Martyn van Nierop.

The legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking is 16 in the Netherlands.

The students said companies interested in making the product commercially could avoid taxes because the alcohol was in powder form. A number of companies are interested, they said.

Those crazy Dutch come up will come up with anything :lol

In before the moral crusaders/won't somebody think of the children types.

Seriously though I think that all that will happen is the government will change the law to block it's sale to under 16's

3% is like drinking pop. The amount of sachets you'd have to drink to get midly drunk would be ridiculous. Spend the money on a nice bottle of vodka instead.

3% alcohol is more like the lower end of beers. At least here in america anyway.

They seem awfully proud of peddling booze to minors, no?

The legal drinking age is already 16, nobody wants to see a drunk 15 year old. Trust me, I've been one.

3% is only a few % less than your average beer isn't it? So a few of them and you might feel a tad tipsy maybe.

Either way though it defeats the fun of drinking.

Most (American) beer is between 4-6% and can get up to 10% You can't actually ferment any alcohol above ~14% to give you some perspective.

would it not would make it 3% stronger with every sachet?!

:lol No it wouldn't. Maths is definitely not my strong point but, while it would increase the total volume of the drink and therefore the total alcohol in the drink, the % alcohol content would drop.

If you used the same amount of liquid, throwing more in would make it stronger. 3% might not be enough to get a gnat drunk but you can imagine how much the little scrubbers would glug down.
