Guest The B-Man
What do you think? Does Shearer deserver to be remembered as Newcastles last number 9?
Guest The Crippler
No they shouldn't. Shearer himself has said they shouldn't. The Newcastle number 9 jersey is massive there and they've had some great number 9s and hopefully another one can continue the great tradition. I think Newcastle may have been willing to retire it but Shearer clearly doesn't want it to be retired. From what I've read today, it seems Michael Owen is going to be offered it and he seems keen to take it because he understands what it means to the Geordie people. It's nice to see they are putting up a Shearer statue outside St James' though.
Guest Boyo
No. What if they get another Geordie scoring sensation who rejects moves to Man Utd and Chelsea (therefore certain silverware and medals) who scores 207 goals and wore the number 10 shirt? Would they retire that, too? FIFA didn't even allow Argentina to retire the number 10 shirt. Cheers!
Guest FreeSpirit
No, Definitely Not As great as Shearer was for Newcastle, life goes on. No man should be bigger than the football club itself.
Guest MojoPogo
And Brazil, who have more reason than ANYONE to retire the no 10, havent retired the shirt either, so no, i think not in this case.
Red05 343
No they shouldn't. They should rename one of their stands "The Shearer Stand" or something.
Guest Jimmy Redman
No, I agree with others, no man is bigger than a club. I dont agree with retiring shirts. As Ray suggested, rename a stand or something. And the statue. There are other ways of honouring him, and he deserves to be honoured.
Guest PHIZZLE
No they shouldn't. They should rename one of their stands "The Shearer Stand" or something. yeah thats a good idea but I'm not a fan of retiring jerseys no matter how much a player has done for the team
Guest Moobs
No, I don't think so. I think a statue would be enough. Great match last night though.
Guest Nemesis Enforcer
Nope and they wouldn't be allowed (like Boyo said) to do so anyway. I don't think Shearer was worthy of having his number retired anyway, nor any footballer for that matter, they may be brillient indevidually but without the rest of the team they wouldn't be anyhting, no one man is above the team and to retire his number wouldn't prove anyhting, he was not the firs to wear it so why should be have the honour of it being always attributed to just that player
Guest Sav
Nope and they wouldn't be allowed (like Boyo said) to do so anyway.International teams aren't allowed but club teams wouldn't have a problem.
Guest The Crippler
Yeah, there would be nothing to stop Newcastle just not assigning the number 9 to someone when registering the squad numbers.
RetroIC Gaming 196
Man City retired a shirt number ( Marc Vivin Foe's) when he died, so yes you can do it but I dont think teams should
Red05 343
Yes but that wasn't a highly prestegious shirt number. It was something less highly regarded, like 23 or 25 i think it was.
Guest Al Stevens
Plus also Shearer hasnt died so personally it would be stupid to retire the number 9 shirt
