Soup!

Let's set the scene...

You offer to take someone out for a meal as gesture (e.g - after receiving a new suit free of charge from them) and you sit down in the restaurant, and they order just soup and they refuse that that constitutes the meal offer and that the meal offer remains for another time.

Is soup a meal in your opinion? Or is it only a meal when crumbled crackers/bread are involved? Even sitting down at the table symbolises that it is surely a meal.

Or are there any fools out there that think soup isn't actually a 'proper meal'?

BTW - can I ask our American fellows if the soup is nice in Mendys? Just for future reference. ;)

I've always thought of Soup being a starter and not the actual meal itself, just something to line our stomach whilst you wait for the main course, even with Bread or what-have-ya i still dont see it as being a proper meal.

here's a question...

Do you eat soup, or do you drink it?

Yow! That's some spicy mulligatawny!

I'd put soup in the same category as something like a big salad: If one person is offering to pay for it (and is thanked for doing so) then it's a meal.

Any time you sit down in a restaurant with somebody and have something to eat/drink, then it's a "meal".

Otherwise you're going to be limiting yourself by what the OTHER person decides as being the meal limits, and it could be five courses, wine and coffee.

If it's in a bowl and you use a spoon, then you are eating it.....if it's in a cup, then you are drinking it.

If you sat down in a place that you have to pay for the soup, then that complies with your offer....it wasn't your fault that is all he or she wanted.

Does the same apply to wine?
Depends if you have vegetables or other soup like ingredients in the wine bub.........But I would say only soup........and at a push custard, would fall into this category.

And maybe melted Ice-cream too.

If you offer to take someone out to dinner, they oblige, they sit down, and you pay for whatever they get... well then that's their meal. If they get a cup of coffee, too bad. It may not be a filling or proper meal, but I know of some crazy ladies who eat little more for a 'meal.'

As one of TWO's most prevolent Americans I think I can speak for a majority of us when I say: "I've never been to, nor have I heard of a Mendys."

Soup is a meal:

I think soup is a starter in a resturant only because the restaraunt wants to take your money it should be a meal!!

It is a meal at home because you buy one which will fill you up, is nice and thick and a soup that tastes of something you like! :D

I'm well aware of Mendys. They do great swordfish. It's the best, THE BEST.

Pabster, what is it with you and Seinfeld?

I think, in the episode in question, the friend on the recieving end of the meal was being unreasonable. But then again, Jerry was being his normal self- absorbed self. He wasn't offering to take the friend out in exchange for good company and out of the kindness of his heart, like most people would. But saw it as more of an obligation to someone he didn't particularly have any use for anyway.

In real life, though, i think it would happen like this. Firiend 1 would offer to treat friend 2, and they would set a date. Or, if they were out together, friend 2 could say, i'm not really hungry or don't have time for our meal, so let's do it another time. But then friend 2 would have to pay for the soup. Otherwise, if both friends agree that they are going to eat the meal they had agreed on, then friend 2 has to be satisfied with whatever the meal consists of. And I think friend 1 shouldn't be looking for any excuse to get it over with by paying for some random meal. They should decide at the beginning of the meal, this is going to be the meal i offered you.

Honestly, i think this is one of those issues that is pretty uncommon except in a Seinfeld episode.

If he sits down, its over. He has to live with whatever he decides to order. If he doesn't like it, tought s**t, he ordered it.

As for Mendy's I don't think its an actual place, and if it is, I've not heard of it. Try goggling it or something.
