Guest Dicky
can somebody explain the concept of this for me? and why they have them? and what they are etc lol
Guest Jimmy Redman
Dark matches are simply matches that go on at a WWE event before the TV tapings start (EDIT: and after they end ;)). Most of the time they'd involve a 'jobber', an Indy worker, or just someone they're just starting to bring in. Guest Phox
I'm sure someone will be able to do it better than me but here's my 'defintion'. A dark match is match is a match that takes place at a TV taping, but is not taped for the actual broadcast. They can take place at the start or end of the taped period. Or something... Edit: Yeah, what he said!
Guest Dicky
how come then like the undertaker and the great thingemybob came out for raw's dark match if they use jobbers? that must of been tiring for their workload, having to travel to more places Edited April 21, 2006 by MrFill
Guest Phox
It's usually the jobbers that do the pre-show dark matches and the Main Eventers who do the post-show matches. The majority of the crowd would just leave if Johnny Mc Jobber had a match against Jacob Jobberson at the end of the show.
Guest Dicky
why do they do dark matches though? its strange DS edit: watch the text talk please Edited April 21, 2006 by Paul
Guest Phox
To get the crowd warmed up at the start, I pressume. And post-show ones I'd have to say to make sure the crowd leave on a high, if the show finished at a screw job ending or the like...
Guest MrFill
The dark match at the end is usually there to send the crowd home happy - give them something to see that the at-home audience don't get. The problem is that most of the audience has got up and left, so they don't get to see it. It also gives a chance for people in a feud to get victories that "mean nothing" since it's not televised. DC 536
They are also used to get new talent exposed to a live crowd, and to see how they cope, interact and how the crowd react to them.......kinda like a live try-out match..... Goldberg had loads of dark matches before being on tv, as did 'Taker, Bret, HBK, Austin, Finlay etc....It is also a good way to get someone in ring shape after a long lay-off too. Guest Ro_y Disco
In professional wrestling, a dark match is a match that is part of a televised card, but is not itself televised. Most dark matches are held at the beginning of wrestling cards; usually, one or two dark matches are used to "warm up" the live crowd for the upcoming televised event. A dark match may also be held at the end of a card, after TV cameras have gone black. Dark matches at the beginning of a card typically feature either local talent, or talent from developmental territories for a larger promotion. Televised WWE cards will often feature talent from its main developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling, in their dark matches. Dark matches at the end of a card generally feature main event-level wrestlers, and are often used to sell more tickets to the live event and also to send the crowd home happy. Dark matches are almost never acknowledged (in kayfabe), but are sometimes used to gauge fan reaction to developmental talent that a promotion is considering elevating to their main show. So there you go...

Hence why there was an Undertaker dark match at the end of Raw on Monday.
Guest Slim Jim
At the SuperShows they film SmackDown first then have Raw live if I'm correct.
