PS3 set to be region free, and stop used game playing.

It looks like the PS3 is going to be region free, this appears to be because of Australia's law saying that you can mod your PS2 as much as you want, legally.

Not only that, but they're patenting technology to stop the console playing used games, so you'd have to buy every game you want for yourself - note that this will also stop renting, borrowing friend's games, and any game returns to stores.

That really sucks about the exclusivity of the games, but I got to hand it to them, its a smart business decision. But it has set the games industry back to early 1999 with all the complaints about games being too expensive. Used games were the perfect remedy for that :(

Sony are said to be working on the technology, so the only way that it won't happen is if there's enough backlash before the actual launch (so you've got about a year or so then :P), because if they get enough "complaints" from the industry, then they'll have to re-think.

If they do stick with it, then companies like GameFly and Blockbuster will just have to ignore PS3, which gives a huge boost to the 360 and Revolution.

Unless they intend on selling the games for about $20/£20 on launch, which will be almost impossible considering that they'll be on Blu-Ray discs. :P
