thats just how i feel Mr Dragon, i don't mind if a film is inspired by a film or Genre (i'm Tarantino's biggest fan) but just remaking an old movie and in the case of the japanese movie remakes not that old (ringu was made in 1998) is not good as you will NEVER live up to the original! [doberman brothers] OI! hollywood NOOOOOOOOOO! [/doberman brothers]

The popularity of remakes of foreign films suggests there is a quite frightening level of illiteracy amoungst the general public who shy away from the higher quality originals in which they are required to read. I've yet to find an American remake that stands up favourably to it's inspiration. As for remakes of older movies' date=' well certainly a lot of them are entertaining but there's nothing you'd place in a Best Movies Ever list.[/quote']I agree in your thinking Mr Dragon, but think the word 'illiteracy' is a bit harsh. It's not that they don't want/like to 'read' their movies (Passion Of The Christ is an example of a completelt subtitled movie that was a hit with western audiences, admittedly the subject matter did help), simply they haven't been shown how to enjoy a good movie regardless of what it may entail. I have a friend who refuses to watch any movie that's black and white, cos, in his mind, B&W = old = crap. I have tried with Clerks, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Laurel and Hardy, The Third Man, King King (1933), or many other legendary flicks. But no matter what I throw in front of him, he can't watch it. It saddens me at times TBH.

Actually Passion of the Christ was only really a big hit in the USA (alot of church groups going ect) but here it did well but wasn't anything like a huge movie, it was way behind the top movie of the year i believe

I am not normally too keen on remakes, as they never seem to do the original film justice. For example, two classic Michael Caine movies Alfie and The Italian Job have been remade over the past few years. The Italian Job just doesn't match up. The original was a fun, action filled movie which kept you interested throughout. However the remake starring Matt Damon et all just made me fall asleep. Alfie with Jude Law was good, but again not on the same level as the orignal.
