Channeling the Mark Within

Well I've just finished watching Kurt Angle v Big Show from this year's No Mercy, and as well as being a really entertaining match it was also a wierd reminder that sometimes you can still forget for just a second that wrestling is fake.

Well I can anyway... I mean throughout this feud I've genuinely wanted to see Kurt Angle get destroyed by Big Show... Angle is playing this ultra-bastard heel so well it's unbelievable, and I really wanted to see Show get his revenge on Angle, particularly after they shaved Show. Don't ask me why, sometimes I just end up actually properly hating the bad guys like I would do when I was just a little kid.

Shane Douglas v Raven was another example for me... I remember that then I found myself actually really wanting to see Father James Mitchell get the living shit beaten out him after they shaved Raven's head too. Or even when Austin was fighting the corporation back in 1999 you'd find yourself really wanting Austin to beat the shit out of McMahon etc.

Obviously half the time this doesn't apply to me because I'm in smark mode most of the time but there are still moments which I'm a complete mark I'm happy to say.

Basically my question to you all is do you still find yourself getting really into the storylines? Like do you for instance get pissed off when Evolution triple teams Randy Orton etc? Is there still a little mark inside you or do you really have trouble drifting out of reality when watching?

The thing is, since I stopped being a casual fan and actually learned something about the business. I stopped being able to suspend my disbelief and watched it like a critic would. 'That was a sloppy match', 'Angle carried him through that', 'Cena has to little moves and no psychology' That sort of thng. I find it hard to get caught up in it lik I used to. Some of the fewmonents when I actually marked out was when Gurrero won the title, but even that was based on his real life experiences.

Marking Out is one of the few enjoyments I have left when watching wrestling. As soon as Im watching a TV show of wrestling TNA etc I always turn into Super Mark. He knows its all pre-determind but he sure as hell loves it.

Every time Jeff jarrett Hits someone with the Guitar I just laugh my ass off with sheer delight. recently Ive really wanted to see raven get his ass kicked for being an anus to Chris Harris etc, I watched No Mercy the other day myself and I really wanted to see JBL have his ass handed to him on a plate by the Undertaker.

Marking out doesnt make you any less of a fan as long as your not really a proper mark in the sense you do believe it all

I don't mark out often but I do now and then.... it's always when there is something genuine behind it though. Benoit main-eventing WM20 (against HH the Stroke Absuer and HBK the Rattle Thrower).... yeah, I was jumping around my room going "yes, yes, ****ing yes!"

I marked out at Wembley too.... really wanted Kane to come and shut Snitsky up! Am I doing wha the WWE wants and am booing Snitsky because he's a bad guy? No, I'm booing him because I think he's crap. But the result is the same - I'm marking out shouting "Go on Kane, kill him!". Real World of Sport styled encouragement! lol

Once I found out how the business worked I found it harder and harder to suspend my belief. The one time I can remember going apesh*t over was when Jericho won the Undisputed title. I was so sure they would give it to the Rock, so it was a major surprise when it was Y2J.

Sometimes I mark out the other way as well, for example, when HHH won over Booker T at WMXIX I was jumping around the living room cursing Hunter for all I was worth.

The one instant I would defy anyone not to mark out was when Mick Foley was thrown off the cell. Seeing it live, even knowing wrestling is predetermined, everybody must've marked out for it. Seeing it without knowing what was going to happen is the greatest "HOLY SH*T" moment in WWF/E history. It still is great to watch, but nothing can replicate the feeling of watching it actually happen.

Each HHH Victory as is as good if not better than the last. That was a true mark out moment. I was so glad HHH beat the bugger. I mean after all the better people he had beaten liek HBK and RVD it would have been silly to make him lose to Booker T

Gah... please don't turn this into a HHH thread. We've had the Booker T job debate about a million times too.

You're marking out in these situations yes but you still know its fake, I'm talking about situations where like say Mick Foley wins the world title and you are immersed into the show, forgetting its all fake for just a few moments.

I know I'm 20 years old and all that but its nice to be able to forget that its fake for a while every now and then.

A few years ago I remember marking out when Rock hit Autin with a stunner. Nobody used each others moves back then, at least not as often as nowadyas. I was just thinking it was such a big deal and he may as well have spit in his face and called his baby ugly or something it was such an insult and a humilitation to Austin. It was awesome. And putting the beer next to him was just the tip of the iceberg.

Lets be frank here. There's nothing wrong with us turning into marks while we watch. It's THE reason we started watching. It's one of the reasons I still watch. We know that they aren't really trying to kill each other but they look like they could really hate each other and when that happens, the guys are doing their job well.

I always turn mark whenever something doesn't go the way I hoped on Raw or Smackdown or any PPV I happen to be watching. :xyx

I get ya Si. Ok I turn into mark mode every match Grandmaster Sexay is in literally. I shout at the TV which is often hilarious sitting watching Memphis Wrestling on a monday night with my nan. She gives me a true look of distain as I plead for Grandmaster to hit the Hip Hop Drop

And talk about the Rock. Man I go back and watch old Rock matches circa 2000/1999 as much as I can. I used to mark like a bitch during Rock matches and still do to an extent. Its more his older stuff that has me begging for more. And I mean however bad the Peoples Elbow is in reality when you look at it from a marks point of view its the best move in the world. I'll never forget the first time I saw that move and all I wanted to do was do it myself then. It was truely awesome and still is depending on how you look at it
