From BBC.co.uk:

Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked following pressure over faked photos of soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner.

The Queen's Lancashire Regiment earlier told a press conference the Mirror had to apologise for running the pictures and endangering British troops.

A statement from the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax". The Mirror board said it would be "inappropriate" for Morgan to continue.

Speaking to journalists on Friday morning, Morgan had been bullish, saying he would not resign.

But in a news conference in Preston on Friday afternoon, the regiment demonstrated to reporters the aspects of uniform and equipment which it said proved the photographs were fake.

Roger Goodman, speaking on behalf of the QLR, said the regiment's soldiers would not be celebrating but added: "They will see this as vindication.

"It is just a great pity it has taken so long... and that so much damage has been done in the meantime."

The Conservatives said they hoped lessons had been learned from the row.

Deputy leader and foreign affairs spokesman, Michael Ancram, said: ''Looking at the facts objectively, this is the right thing for Piers Morgan to have done.

"The photos that were published in the Daily Mirror have done great damage to the reputation of our troops, who are serving under some of the most difficult conditions in Iraq.''

Earlier Colonel Black, a former regiment commander of the QLR, said the pictures put lives in danger and acted as a "recruiting poster" for al-Qaeda.

Downing Street refused to comment on Morgan's resignation, saying it was a matter for the Mirror board.

The regiment's Brigadier Geoff Sheldon said the vehicle featured in the photographs had been located in a Territorial Army base in Lancashire and had never been in Iraq.

He said the QLR's reputation had been damaged by the Mirror and asked the newspaper to apologise because the evidence they were staged was "overwhelming".

Morgan will be replaced on a temporary basis by his deputy, Des Kelly.

The newspaper released a statement saying: "The Daily Mirror published in good faith photographs which it absolutely believed were genuine images of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner.

"However there is now sufficient evidence to suggest that these pictures are fakes and that the Daily Mirror has been the subject of a calculated and malicious hoax.

"The Daily Mirror therefore apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR and the Army in Iraq.

"The paper will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation.

"The board of Trinity Mirror has decided that it would be inappropriate for Piers Morgan to continue in his role as editor of the Daily Mirror and he will therefore be stepping down with immediate effect."

What I can't believe is that the Mirror didn't check this out more thoroughly. This is an incredibly serious accusation to be making and you'd think they'd have checked it over and over to make sure they were real. I mean there was one shot of a gun being rammed into one of the "prisoners" crotch. I don't know about you but if a guns being rammed into your ball sack, you tend to close your legs.

It seems like the Mirror were all to ready to believe that they were real as it suits their agenda. This isn't to say there isn't any abuse going on from British troops, there is probably a fair chance there is, but what the Mirror have done is make what was already a dangerous operation for the British troops a whole lot more dangerous.

Thoughts guys?

I suppose once the photos of US marines abusing prisoners came out and got massive attention i'm sure there was more than one tabliod would love to get hold of something like, the Mirror did, rushed it out and are now paying the consequences of their own stupidity so you can't really feel sorry for them.

Mind you the Queen's Lancashire Regiment are still under investigation and have been long before the "photos" appeared for a series of events including several deaths and serious injuries suffered by prisoners in custody.

hes not been sacked hes resigned according the sky news and the Mirror has apologised. Piers Morgan was anti-war from the start and did this because he is attention seeking and needs to be popular amongst anti-war supporters. The army want a full front page apology and they had better get it because Piers Morgan has got blood on his hands Edited by Jack

The Mirror has just gone downhill fast over the last few years, they did this to try and sell a few more papers, I can't help but feel it's probably had the reverse effect, and I can't feel sorry for them or for Morgan.

Well I suppose the truth is out now and while it's good that it's out you have to believe that the damage is already done. The beheading of the American civilian in Iraq was as a result of the American abuse pictures, let's just hope nothing like this happens to anyone from this country who is over there as a result from these fake pictures.

No matter how many extra papers Morgan sold because of these photos (which, of course, turned out to be faked), he can't win either way...

1. If he genuinely believed them to be true then he's incompetant

2. If he suspected them as fakes but went ahead anyway then he should be sacked

Resigning in shame is just about as good as it gets for this scumbag. I hate him. Hate him, hate him, hate him. This is the same bull-mastif who went after Maxine Carr's new identity.

Scum of the earth.

Cheers!

On BBC news this morning they stated he had been sacked, it amazes me how a story can change over various news companies! Anyway As you guys have said, with anything as serious as this it was up to the Mirror to check the legitamacy of the photos before printing them, and especially before printing a front page that said something along the lines of "We are telling the truth". Alot of the blame for what comes next will fall on Mr Morgan and the Mirror for printing those photos and they deserve it. I cant stand the guy and i am pleased that he has been proved wrong and i hope he gets what is coming to him.
