The recent release of Avengers: Infinity War brought forth a furor of sorts amongst Marvel fans and rightly so. Shield is an acronym for Strategic Hazard Intervention/Espionage Logistics Directorate) in Marvel Comics. This is an international intelligence and counters terrorist organization which has a vital presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shield existed way long before when it paved its way with the brotherhood of the Shield comprising a group of special individuals which were formed in Ancient Egypt whose goal was to protect earth from alien forces.
Shield in the Marvel Cinematic Universe stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) which was created by the US government. The first references to Shield becoming a prominent part of Marvel came with the introduction of Agent Coulson in the Iron Man movie who jokes that Shield is a brand-new organization so they don’t have a funny acronym as yet. This is counteracted in the second installment of Iron Man 2 when Nick Fury goes on to say that Shield has been present since decades and that Tony Stark’s (Iron Man) father Howard Stark was the founder of Shield. Shield agents Coulson again appears in Iron Man 2 who is again made a major player in the movie Thor. There are also other agents in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where all these agents feature in every movie. Some notable agents of Shield are Natasha(Black Widow) and Agent Barton who makes an appearance in Thor. “The Incredible Hulk” that uses Shield’s database and the US army again taking Shield’s help by borrowing a sonic cannon from them.
3. Nick Fury:
Director of Shield, Nick Fury is the link binding all the Marvel superheroes together. For people who don’t know of his past, Nick Fury is a World War 2 soldier who led a team of Rangers “The Howlers”. He even has fought alongside Captain America and other superheroes. Nick Fury has a major part to play in the Avengers team and has been seen since “The Avengers” released. Nick also dates back to the time of “The Incredible Hulk” where certain documents in the movie appear to have been signed by him.
4. Iron Man & Stark Industries:
Tony Stark and Stark Industries are the main focus of Iron Man and Iron Man 2. But, if you go around searching for their origins, you can trace it back till “The Incredible Hulk” wherein weapons have been made by Stark Industries to counter the big green monster. The Iron Man 2 DVD also revealed that the gamma radiation device involved with Bruce’s Banner situation was also the creation of Stark Industries. In the ending scenes of the movie, Tony Stark is seen discussing a team of special individuals.
5. The Cosmic Cube:
The Cosmic Cube has its earliest references not just in “Captain America: The First Avenger” which forms the crux of the movie and the fight between Captain America and Red Skull. The cosmic cube is also referred to the Iron Man 2 and Thor. It also plays a crucial part in the first Avengers movie.
